New Delhi, March 25, 2025 – A three-member Supreme Court-appointed committee launched its inquiry into allegations against Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma on Tuesday, visiting his official residence at 30, Tughlak Crescent. The probe follows reports of unaccounted cash found after a fire broke out in a storeroom on March 14, a discovery that has rocked India’s judiciary.
The committee—comprising Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court Judge Anu Sivaraman—spent about 45 minutes at Varma’s home, inspecting the site. The investigation, ordered by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on March 22, stems from a Delhi Police report and visuals of burnt currency notes, prompting Varma’s suspension from judicial duties.
Varma denies the allegations, calling them a “conspiracy to malign” him. He claims the storeroom, where the cash was found, is detached from his main residence and accessible to staff, suggesting no family involvement. Yet, the Delhi High Court Chief Justice’s initial report found no evidence of external entry, hinting at a deeper mystery.
