Bengaluru, March 24, 2025 – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday dismissed allegations that the Congress party intends to amend the Indian Constitution, terming the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) accusations as “baseless and misleading.” The rebuttal comes amid a heated political row sparked by Union Minister Anurag Thakur’s claim that Congress aims to alter the Constitution to appease its allies and vote bank.
A Political Firestorm Ignites
Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Shivakumar accused the BJP of twisting facts to confuse voters ahead of crucial state developments. “The BJP has no real agenda, so they resort to lies. The Constitution is sacred to us—crafted by Babasaheb Ambedkar—and we will never tamper with it,” he said, challenging Thakur to substantiate his allegations with evidence.
The controversy erupted after Thakur, speaking at a rally, alleged that Congress’s desperation to cling to power through its INDIA bloc allies would lead to constitutional changes favoring certain communities. The remarks drew sharp criticism from the opposition, with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah calling them a “ploy to divert attention” from the BJP’s governance failures.
BJP Strikes Back with Vehemence
Undeterred, Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra launched a scathing counterattack, accusing the Congress of endangering the Constitution with its “pseudo-secular agenda.” “The INDIA bloc allies thrive on divisive tactics, but the people of Karnataka see through this charade,” he asserted in an interview with Times Now. The BJP has latched onto Shivakumar’s remarks to galvanize its supporters, casting the controversy as a crucial fight to “safeguard the essence of Bharat.”
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi intensified the offensive, telling News18, “Congress invokes Ambedkar’s name, yet their legacy—from the Emergency to appeasement politics—mocks his ideals.” The party’s digital warriors have gone into overdrive, amplifying Thakur’s allegations with trending hashtags like #SaveConstitution, making it a rallying cry across Karnataka’s social media landscape.
